For years, Dr. Mercola has been warning of the dangers of caffeine to pregnant woman and the babies inside their wombs. A new study done on pregnant mice shows that a dose of caffeine from two cups of coffee can affect the growth of the fetus’ heart and may reduce the heart function of the mice during its entire lifespan. Additionally, the male baby mice also gained higher body fats with just a minimal amount of caffeine. To be clear, it’s not two cups per day but two cups for the entire pregnancy. So what are the implications of this new study to humans? How can an unborn or a newly born baby be affected by caffeine? An expectant mother can pass caffeine to her unborn baby through the placenta, while newborns can get caffeine through breast milk. The developing fetus cannot detoxify caffeine and caffeine stays longer in an infant’s system because its half-life is extended. Lots of problems may occur if you absorb caffeine during your pregnancy. Caffeine can increase the risk of miscarriage and low birth weight. Your baby may also increase the risk of developing defects such as cleft palate and increase his/her risk of death due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Your calcium and iron and calcium levels may also decrease. Caffeine is commonly found in coffee. It is also found in some foods, drinks and medications like tea, carbonated drinks, energy drinks, cocoa and chocolate, and over-the-counter and prescription drugs, mostly in pain medications. You will need careful planning and preparation to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy child. Having good physical condition will lead to a better chance of a healthy pregnancy and give your baby a strong foundation for a healthier life. Here are some tips to help you have a healthy pregnancy:· Get regular exercise and maintain your weight· Include omega-3 fats in your diet· Give up on your cell phone to minimize the dangers of radiation to your unborn child· Manage your stress, and· Optimize your Vitamin D levelsA healthy mom will most likely deliver a healthy baby. Caffeine enters the bloodstream through the stomach and small intestine and can have its effects just 15 minutes after it was consumed. Once in the body, caffeine is still for hours: it takes about six hours for half the caffeine to delete.
While researchers debate how much caffeine during pregnancy is acceptable, there is evidence to suggest that any amount to cause physical effects on your child. This is because caffeine passes through the placenta and is absorbed by your baby. Adults are capable of breaking down caffeine fairly quickly, thanks to chemicals inside our body. However, the child can not do this. This means that caffeine will be stored inside of your blood for long periods, and could reach dangerously high levels.
Caffeine also affects other aspects of the health of your child. And ‘known to increase the baby’s heartbeat and can affect how it moves in the womb. Since caffeine is a diuretic, may also influence feeding your baby receives from you. Caffeine can cause to absorb less iron and calcium from food, to the detriment of the full potential of your baby’s fetal development.
Recent studies have focused on the effects of coffee consumption during pregnancy. A large study from Denmark of more than 80,000 pregnant women on their coffee consumption. This study found that women who drank large amounts of coffee during pregnancy were more likely to experience a miscarriage. Women who drank more than two cups of coffee a day had a slightly increased risk of miscarriage, while those who drank eight or more cups had a 59% increase. That is why it is important to monitor the consumption of caffeine during pregnancy.
Interestingly, this Danish study found that the risk significantly higher than that of miscarriage was specific for the coffee. Other caffeine-containing beverages and food does not have the same significant increase, leading researchers to believe that other chemicals contained in coffee could have a role in denial.

Morning sickness is known by a number of names – vomiting of pregnancy, nausea, nausea of gravidarum or pregnancy sickness. Morning sickness is a state that affects most expecting mothers and also some of the women who have used hormone replacement therapy also know as hormonal contraception. The symptoms of morning sickness are the strongest during the early hours of the day and gradually reduce as the time progresses during the course of the day. This feeling of nausea may be mild or also cause the pregnant woman to vomit. This might lead to dehydration and cause the woman to lose weight in some cases; also alkalosis and hypokalemia are possibilities. A severe state of morning sickness is a rare phenomenon and occurs in only 1% of all pregnancies. If you are experiencing morning sickness, you probably are already 6 weeks pregnant but do not worry as this should have been gone by the twelfth week of pregnancy. There is no definite cause of morning sickness but medical experts have stated a few possibilities as to how and why morning sickness would occur in pregnant women. An increase in the hormone estrogen which gets hikes by about a 100 times during pregnancy, might cause morning sickness, a drop in the level of blood sugar as the placenta begins to draw energy and nutrition from the mother to the baby might be yet another cause, an increase in the levels of progesterone which help to relax the muscles of the stomach during pregnancy might however cause too much of relaxation and in the process hamper the functioning of the gastroephageal reflux disease leading to an excess of stomach acids. Also pregnant women are very sensitive to odours which might over stimulate the cells and trigger nausea. Even though the causes of morning sickness are not definitely stated, a list of very effective treatments has been allotted after having noticed that they work very successfully in most cases of women suffering from morning sickness. These treatments make sure that the symptoms of morning sickness are dealt with even though the root cause of morning sickness still cannot be cured for sure. Smelling freshly cut lemons or tasting them when you feel nauseated is a good cure, try to not keep an empty stomach for a very long duration, try to eat everything that your body yearns for, try to avoid large wholesome meals and try to eat smaller but oft occurring meals more often, eating cabbage is a very good option too, a specific diet referred to as the brat diet – bananas, rice, applesauce and toast with tea is a very good way to tackle morning sickness. Ginger flavoured food items help as well, stick to drier foods and drink fluids only after a sufficient time after you have eaten solids, if you are not being able to hold water, try to suck on ice cubes that have been made from water or fruit juices. If these simple measures do not work, you probably will have to get the aid of a doctor and try to cure your morning sickness with prescribed medicines.
